My Identity
Inspired by Mexican Muralism in early 1920, the In Between bracelet is an allegory to my non-binary gender Identity. The narrative in the bracelet challenges the notions of a gender binary system and the colonial logic of Canada and Mexico. Both countries are in the process of decolonizing and reconciling. The depiction of the human figure in the foreground plane represents the idealization of binary gender as opposed to the nonbinary genderless in the middle.
The portrayal of symbols in the background represents the Canadian and Mexican landscapes, also a triangle to identify the in-between state. To tell the narrative of the importance of the Canadian land, I depicted the symbols of the maple leaf, the moose, the prairies and the moon. The opposite of the landscape is the city of Toronto and the female figure narrating the colonialism history. On the other side where the sun, the volcanos Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, nopal represent Mexico. The juxtaposition of the nude male figure, Mexico City and the Iztaccíhuatl (Mujer Dormida) is a visual representation of the Toxic Masculinity in Mexico, and the lack of first nations representation as in the section of Canada represents the dominant culture of colonial logic.
