Mural on Public Electric Box. Acrylic on Metal, 33.5” x 79” x 19”.
Diaspora is a mural on an electric box located at 120 Front Street East, Toronto, and is part of the Street Art Toronto program. The mural is inspired by the Mexican Diaspora in which I narrate my migration to Canada. Born in Mexico City in the Izatapala ward, I represented the this land with the endemic flora of the area and my mixed race heritage with European swans. The use of Mexican first Nations iconography depicts part of my ancestors of this land. The representation of the Sun and the Moon conveys the passing of time, the cycle of life, and the two sides of my heritage. As many immigrants, you are born in one land but you are reborn in another. The parallels between Mexico City and Toronto are represented with the body of water Lake Texcoco and Lake Ontario and to reinforce this idea, the Dahlias and the Trillium flowers are rendered. It is a celebration of immigration and the diaspora that many of us live in.
